Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1960, and rose to fame as a graffiti artist. He and Al Diaz went by the name SAMO; by 1978, Basquiat worked retail by day and painted graffiti by night. The group renamed itself to Gray and started performing in clubs around New York City. During the early ’80s, he began attracting attention as a solo artist. He covered “The New York Times Magazine” in the mid-’80s, and, despite his blossoming career, Basquiat became withdrawn with the death of Andy Warhol in early 1987. He fell into a pattern of heroin addiction and died of an overdose on August 12, 1988, in New York City at the age of 27. Today, Basquiat’s paintings are some of the most valuable on the planet. In May 2017, a Basquiat painting sold to a Japanese collector for $110.5 million, a record sale price for an American artist.
