Nagai Sriram comes from a family of musicians. He was born on December 4, 1958, to his parents, Sri. R.Rajagopalan and Smt. R. Komavall.

At the age of ten, he was introduced to the Carnatic violin by his grandmother, R. Komalavalli, and later took further training from his uncle Vidwan Kalaimaamani Nagai R. Muralidharan.

Starting to play violin from the early age of ten, his career as a violinist lasted more than three decades. He became a top-ranking violinist known for his clarity, rich tonal quality as well as having established his own academic style.
